5 things to consider when moving business premises

Moving to new business premises is easy. It might sound like a mammoth task when you think about what’s ahead but as long as you’re organised you can succeed without getting too stressed.

That’s why we have highlighted the most important things you need to consider when moving business premises so there will be no room left for error.

Time

How long will it take to set up the new workspace? Do you need to transfer furniture and technology from your original office or are you ordering brand new? Considering how long it will take is the first task you need to face. It can take some businesses, from negotiating with landlords and solicitors to designing the office, up to 12 months.

It all depends on the size of your business and if you need to do any construction or design work on your new business premise. You need to find out the timescale so you can keep your business working smoothly. Employees need to be notified if they have to work from home or if the business will be temporarily shut until it reopens.

IT setup

Now that most businesses work online, it’s essential all computers and internet access is setup correctly. It’s not a good first impression if you’re having trouble with your Wi-fi on the first day. Before you move in, you should find out if the premise has any problems accessing the internet. The area could have poor signal.

If that’s the case, then you need to get boosters or professional assistance. Ensure you give the responsibilities of setting up the computers and internet to someone who knows what they’re doing. This may seem obvious but the job needs to be done correctly.

Health and safety checks

Before you open your business for your customers or even your staff, you need to inspect the property and do a risk assessment. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 describes the duties employers have to their employees. You have to inspect the premise for any potential hazards and put steps in place to ensure your employees aren’t at risk. Along with inspecting for potential hazards, you have to put the correct health and safety signs like emergency exit signs in place. A first aid kit has to also be prepared.

Security

In relation to health and safety at work, you need to consider if you have to introduce any additional security measures. Your employees need to feel safe and naturally you want to protect your investment. Change door locks and consider getting security cameras.

Office design

Once your business is up and running, it’s difficult to find time again to close for an office renovation. The best time to consider doing any major revamps to your office design is before you open for business. What is your business like? Do you think work productivity and office morale will benefit from an open or closed office space? Do your research to find out if an office design will positively impact your business and your staff.

Moving to a business premise can feel stressful but as long as you make a moving plan and stay organised, you don’t have to worry.
