Why we love Pall Mall Deposit in Notting Hill
First things first, you’ll find this prestigious grand building in the heart of Notting Hill by West London’s Ladbroke Grove. Pall Mall’s name comes from the historical space’s former life as a furniture depository which was built in 1901. It still very much looks the part though, complete with its original sign and period facade, all of which make for a pretty impressive place to work from.
Inside, there’s been a state of the art renovation focussing on airy communal spaces, studios and offices, with skylights and original architectural features. The interior spaces have been imaginatively restored to offer a collection of gorgeous office, studio, meeting room and breakout spaces, while a chic new reception welcomes you into the space. The fabulous new cafe offers delicious, fresh and healthy options, as well as coffee and sweet treats for that morning or afternoon boost.
If you decide to wander about the local neighbourhood, there are plenty of great spots to get your caffeine and lunch fix. With the cultural hotspot of Notting Hill just a stone’s throw away, we love heading to the world-famous Portobello Road. There you’ll find the small but perfectly formed Lowry & Baker, an independent cafe and coffee shop complete with decadent breakfast, brunch and lunch options as well as outrageously good cake. Over on Golborne Road is Café Lisboa, a favourite of chef Yotam Ottolenghi and something of a London institution, known for its Portuguese coffee and pastel de nata custard tarts. Golborne Deli & Wine Store is on the same stretch, great for a casual post-work drink and snack. For something a touch sleeker, then try the Bella Freud-designed restaurant at Laylow on the garden terrace at Gold, which is run by River Café alumni, chef Theo Hill.
Portobello and Golborne Roads are also home to London’s most iconic street markets. Trading all through the week and selling food, bric-a-brac, furniture and flowers, second-hand fans will be happiest rummaging at the antiques market, which has been around since the 1940s.
Pubs are plentiful, with Ladbroke Grove’s The Eagle and The Elgin two of our favourite traditional drinking establishments. The KPH has a slightly more rock’n’roll reputation, with regular gigs and comedy in its theatre bar.
Look up from the bustling streets and you’ll see some of the city’s most impressive architecture. Golborne Road’s Trellick Tower has been a London landmark since 1972, designed in the stark Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger.
Grand Union Canal is also good for a stroll and just a 10 minute walk from Pall Mall Deposit are the stunning surrounds of Kensal Green Cemetery. One of London’s glorious Victorian graveyards known as the Magnificent Seven, it’s home to rare wildlife and plant species and the ideal spot for some rare inner city peace and quiet.
Or stunning Holland Park is only a half hour amble too, with its series of picturesque gardens, including the elegant Japanese Kyoto Garden, as well as a variety of sports courts if you want to get active at the tennis nets. But remember to watch out for the park peacocks. It’s also right next door to the Design Museum if you’re in need of inspiration from the masters of contemporary design.
Getting to Pall Mall Deposit is a doddle, with Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park tubes a short walk away, as well as Kensal Rise on the Overground and a host of busses from across town stopping close by to the building.
